Thyroiditis is caused by an attack on the thyroid, causing inflammation and damage to the thyroid cells. All types of hyperthyroidism are due to an overproduction of thyroid hormones.
Other causes are, viral thyroiditis, de quervain’s thyroiditis, viral infection, mumps virus or adenovirus, thyroid carcinoma, bleeding into a cyst or tumour, trauma to the neck causing soft tissue bruising.
