A breakthrough study conducted by German scientists suggests that blocking a specific type of hormone-like molecule, which is produced by tumors, may help alleviate the pain experienced by cancer patients.
The biology of cancer pain is different to other types of pain, often rendering analgesic drugs ineffective. But in the new study, researchers at Heidelberg University showed that the molecules make nerve endings grow in nearby tissue, causing an acute sensation of pain. The research could one day lead to drugs that can block pain locally at the tumor site.

Most patients with advanced cancer develop diverse symptoms that can limit the efficacy of pain treatment and undermine their quality of life. Pain and symptom severity was measured daily by patient self-assessment.
Prevalence and severity of anorexia, impaired activity, confusion, mood changes, insomnia, constipation, dyspepsia, dyspnoea, coughing, dysphagia and urinary symptoms were significantly reduced, those of sedation, other neuropsychiatric symptoms and dry mouth were significantly increased and those of coma, vertigo, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, intestinal obstruction, erythema, pruritus and sweating remained unchanged.

People with cancer often feel severe or constant pain. The pain the cancer patient experience depends on the type of cancer they have, the stage the disease and the therapy they receive.
Although doctors agree that controlling cancer pain is a high priority, the pain isn’t always understood or treated properly. The pain may be part of a cancer pain syndrome, a specific group of related pains. Cancer pain syndromes can be caused by tumors

Neuropathic pain is the result of an injury or malfunction in the peripheral or central nervous system. The pain is often triggered by an injury, but this injury may or may not involve actual damage to the nervous system. Nerves can be infiltrated or compressed by tumors, strangulated by scar tissue, or inflamed by infection. The pain frequently has burning, lancinating, or electric shock qualities. Persistent allodynia, pain resulting from a non painful stimulus such as a light touch, is also a common characteristic of neuropathic pain. The pain may persist for months or years beyond the apparent healing of any damaged tissues. In this setting, pain signals no longer represent an alarm about ongoing or impending injury, instead the alarm system itself is malfunctioning.
Neuropathic pain is frequently chronic, and tends to have a less robust response to treatment with opioids, but may respond well to other drugs such as anti-seizure and antidepressant medications. Usually, neuropathic problems are not fully reversible, but partial improvement is often possible with proper treatment.
