A new surgical option is showing promising results for so many chronic back pain sufferers. That’s good news for Nancy Bruce. A recent fall left her in terrible pain. “It was just unbelievable how bad it was,” says Bruce.
Bruce was desperate for effective pain management. When drugs and traditional therapies weren’t enough, she tried spinal cord stimulation. Dr. Jerry Lewis uses it to jam the pain signal.
The spinal cord is actually a processor, and so it decreases the amount of pain transmission that gets through to the brain. “All of a sudden, I had my life back. I mean, I could actually do things. I could sit for more than 30 minutes,” says Bruce.

Although there is a huge body of scientific research on cancer biology, the quality and quantity of research on the management of cancer pain lags far behind, according to researchers at the New England Medical Center Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC). Overall, the EPC found that the solid evidence that exists on specific therapies such as anti-inflammatory drugs or opioids is overshadowed by inadequate guidance on more complex choices now expected of front-line clinicians.
In particular, the EPC found little research on quality of life in relation to pain control, drug interactions during long-term cancer pain treatment, the optimal sequence of adding drugs to improve pain control, and the impact that ethnicity has on cancer pain and patients’ responses to treatment. Also, it found almost no analgesic drug trials in children with cancer pain.

Medical Research Council (MRC) scientists at the University of Leicester have made a new advance in understanding how the body fights certain types of cancer and other disease such as Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
The findings are very significant for the immunology field and help elucidate the contribution of natural oxidants such as reactive oxygen species to B cell activation and represent the rationale for using HVCN1 as a target for therapies where activation of B cell needs to be diminished.
