A heart attack is when blood vessels that supply blood to the heart are blocked, preventing enough oxygen from getting to the heart. The heart muscle dies or becomes permanently damaged.

Most heart attacks are caused by a blood clot that blocks one of the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries bring blood and oxygen to the heart. If the blood flow is blocked, the heart starves for oxygen and heart cells die.

University of Illinois at Chicago have an alternative to the ER: the university’s new Sickle Cell Acute Care Treatment Center, 1740 W. Taylor St. The major advantage for patients is that they can get immediate and aggressive treatment.

Dr. Joseph DeSimone, director of the UIC Sickle Cell Center and UIC professor of medicine, explains that severe attacks, or pain crises, occur when small blood vessels become blocked with sickled red blood cells. That can lead to organs throughout the body being poorly oxygenated and possibly damaged. The new unit is only for those patients without complications, DeSimone said. Those who are pregnant or also suffering from shortness of breath, numbness, fever or other symptoms should still go to the ER, he said.

Neuropathic pain is a chronic pain state that usually is accompanied by tissue injury. With neuropathic pain, the nerve fibers themselves may be damaged, dysfunctional or injured.

Pain can develop after injury to any level of the nervous system, the sympathetic nervous system may be involved. Nerve pain is often puzzling and frustrating for people as it seems to respond poorly to standard pain therapies.

Bone pain and fractures can be a problem in advanced cancer. Bisphosphonates are drugs that are used to treat these problems. These drugs bind to areas where bone has been destroyed. This slows down the damage caused by cancer cells.
