An Italian study published in the current issue of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics examines the relationship between cancer pain and inability to express feelings and the effects of treatment.

Alexithymia is likely to be involved in the pain experience of cancer patients, but the extent to which psychological interventions may modify both pain and alexithymia is unclear.

A group of 52 consecutive cancer patients were enrolled in a 6-month multicomponent psychological intervention trial, and compared to 52 control patients who received standard medical care. Validated scales for pain, alexithymia, coping with disease, illness behavior, psychological distress, and psychosocial functioning were administered at baseline and 6 months later.

New findings from researchers in which they suggest that there is a strong link between binge drinking and cancer pain of the pancreas. Scientists say the link between alcohol consumption and pancreatic cancer has been inconsistent.

A new study using more stringent data than in the past shows that more than five drinks in one sitting can more than triple the risk of cancer pain for men, but not for women.

Breast pain is a common problem in younger women who are still having periods, it is less common in older women. The pain can be in one breast or in both, it may come and go each month, or it may last for several weeks.

Many women fear that they have breast cancer when they have pain in the breast. However, less than 10% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have pain. It is important that all breast pain be checked by a doctor to find the cause of the pain.

Anal pain is a knife-like pain when you have your bowels open, and which may last for 10–15 minutes after wards, is probably caused by an anal fissure. Some people describe it as like ‘passing glass’.

Your anal feels swollen and pain persists for more than two to three days. A throbbing pain, worsening over a few days, and bad enough to disturb your sleep, anal pain is only rarely an indication of a more serious condition, such as colorectal cancer.

Although there is a huge body of scientific research on cancer biology, the quality and quantity of research on the management of cancer pain lags far behind, according to researchers at the New England Medical Center Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC). Overall, the EPC found that the solid evidence that exists on specific therapies such as anti-inflammatory drugs or opioids is overshadowed by inadequate guidance on more complex choices now expected of front-line clinicians.

In particular, the EPC found little research on quality of life in relation to pain control, drug interactions during long-term cancer pain treatment, the optimal sequence of adding drugs to improve pain control, and the impact that ethnicity has on cancer pain and patients’ responses to treatment. Also, it found almost no analgesic drug trials in children with cancer pain.

Eating fruit and vegetables slightly reduces the risk of developing cancer, a new study suggests.  Although eating more fruit and vegetables has been associated with cancer prevention for some time, it was not clear how strong the effect was.

The findings of the study, which appear in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, show that around two-and-a-half extra servings of fruit and vegetables a day are linked with a three per cent lower risk of cancer.

Most cancer pain is caused by the tumor pressing on bones, nerves or other organs in your body related to your cancer treatment. It can be acute or chronic. Acute pain is due to damage caused by an injury and tends to only last a short time, painkillers will usually keep it under control.

Chronic pain is pain caused by changes to nerves. Nerve changes may occur due to cancer pressing on nerves or due to chemicals produced by a tumor. It can also be caused by nerve changes due to cancer treatment.

Medical Research Council (MRC) scientists at the University of Leicester have made a new advance in understanding how the body fights certain types of cancer and other disease such as Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

The findings are very significant for the immunology field and help elucidate the contribution of natural oxidants such as reactive oxygen species to B cell activation and represent the rationale for using HVCN1 as a target for therapies where activation of B cell needs to be diminished.
