Injuries and overuse of the shoulder can cause tears in the tendons which are symptoms of shoulder pain. Pain usually serves notice of the tear, but some types of cartilage damage can produce a clicking sound with movement.

Weakness in a shoulder, such as an inability to raise one arm as high as the other, may indicate a tear in the rotator cuff, frozen shoulder leads to stiffness of the joints. Weakness can be due to severe pain from muscle or bone movement.
