Although the exact causes of diabetic neuropathy are unknown, several factors may contribute to the disorder. metabolic factors, such as high blood glucose, long duration of diabetes, abnormal blood fat levels and possibly low levels of insulin.

Autoimmune factors that cause inflammation in nerves, mechanical injury to nerves, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, inherited traits that increase susceptibility to nerve disease,  lifestyle factors, such as smoking or alcohol use are the basic factors of diabetic pain.

Several risk factors increase a person with diabetes pain.  If the patient has red spots, sore spots, blisters, corns, calluses, or consistent pain. A person with diabetes may not properly sense minor injuries, signs of abnormal wear and tear and foot strain.

Diabetic nerve pain most commonly occurs when a person with diabetes has prolonged spells of high blood sugar levels. These high blood sugar levels can damage the nerves without becoming obviously hyperglycaemic.
