According to new research, one of the agents, called Quadramet(r) (samarium SM 153 lexidronam injection), may be more useful than previously thought.
Quadramet can provide very long-lasting pain relief for people with cancer suffering from bone pain,” said Dr. Oliver Sartor, MD, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Boston.

In leukemia, the bone marrow, begins to make white blood cells that do not mature correctly, but continue to reproduce themselves. Normal, healthy cells only reproduce when there is enough space for them to fit. With leukemia, these cells do not respond to the signals to stop and reproduce, regardless of space available.

Cancer pain occurs in many ways. Your pain may be dull, aching or sharp. It could be constant, intermittent, mild, moderate or severe. Adjuvant medications may be used for pain that is difficult to manage. These medications originally designed to treat conditions other than pain, such as tricyclic antidepressants.

Leukemia is not a single disease. Instead, the term leukemia refers to a number of related cancers that start in the blood-forming cells of the bone marrow. There are both acute and chronic forms of leukemia, each with many subtypes that vary in their response to treatment.

Not all people with sickle cell disease have pain crises. About 30% rarely or never have the pain caused by a crisis. About 50% have only a few crises throughout their lives. And about 20% have frequent, severe sickle cell crises.

Sickle cell disease is the most common of the hereditary blood disorders. It occurs almost exclusively among black Americans and black Africans. Sickle cell disease in black Americans occurs in 3 of every 1,000 (or about 1 in 375) live births. Estimates indicate that the severe form of sickle cell disease affects more than 50,000 black Americans.
The man have “shortness of breath, palpitations, and episodes of icterus [yellow eyes]. He had an anemia.” Dr. Herrick described the patient’s blood smear as showing “thin, sickle-shaped and crescent-shaped red cells.”

Pain-killers usually work and debunking any fears people had about the drugs reduced the pain cancer patients felt by an additional one point on a scale of one to ten, where average pain scores are about five out of ten.
All patients were being treated with strong pain-killers but those given the additional information experienced significantly better pain control. The researchers are calling for educational programmes on managing cancer pain and strong pain-killers to be given routinely alongside treatment drugs for cancer.

There are three types of cancer pain, based on where in the body the pain is felt, somatic, visceral, and neuropathic. Pain of all three types can be either acute or chronic. Somatic, visceral, and neuropathic pain can all be felt at the same time or singly and at different times.
Somatic pain relates to nerve ending in tissues or bones which may feel aching.
Viscera refers to the internal areas of the body that are enclosed within a cavity, like the chest, abdomen and pelvis.
Neuropathic pain can be damage or irritation to nerves. It is often described as sharp, flashing, burning, like an electric shock or tingling.

Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects the red blood cells, causing the cells to become hard and pointed instead of soft and round. More than 70,000 American children suffer from this genetic disorder and it is considered an international health problem.
“It’s important to note that massage may not be right for all patients with Sickle Cell Disease or even patients who may suffer from chronic pain,” said Dr. Lemanek, pediatric psychologist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “You have to consider personal characteristic and comfort levels of both the parents and child first before determining if massage is right.”

Sickle cell disease affects 70,000 Americans who experience an average of 0.8 painful episodes each year. The pathophysiology of sickle cell pain is not completely understood.
The disease is characterized by both acute and chronic pain syndromes. Some patients also suffer from chronic pain syndromes including vascular necrosis, leg ulcers, and intractable pain.

People with cancer often feel severe or constant pain. The pain the cancer patient experience depends on the type of cancer they have, the stage the disease and the therapy they receive.
Although doctors agree that controlling cancer pain is a high priority, the pain isn’t always understood or treated properly. The pain may be part of a cancer pain syndrome, a specific group of related pains. Cancer pain syndromes can be caused by tumors

Leukemia is cancer of the blood and develops in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is the soft, spongy center of the long bones that produces the three major blood cells: white blood cells to fight infection; red blood cells that carry oxygen; and platelets that help with blood clotting and stop bleeding.

A sickle cell crisis happens when sickled red blood cells block small blood vessels that carry blood to your bones. This causes pain that can begin suddenly and last several hours to several days.
You might have pain in your back, knees, legs, arms, chest or stomach. The pain can be throbbing, sharp, dull or stabbing with the same frequency or intensity.

Cancer pain can be managed with the availability of pain-relieving therapies, surveys have shown that pain is often under treated in many patients. Physicians may be more focused on control of the disease than on control of pain.
